Running Away with the Circus-Part 2

First week on the degree at the Circus Space, and its no surprise to discover I am a full ten years older than almost everyone else in my year…in fact, I’m a full ten years older than almost all of the students….I’m even older than some of the teachers! Fortunately very few people here see my age as an issue, which is nice, but I am so far behind everyone in terms of flexibility, movement and acrobatic ability it is pretty damn embarrassing. The only saving grace I have is my strength; all those pull-ups and presses were well worth it!
All of the students are amazing people, and though they come from a fairly diverse background they all have such strong drive and compassion. I’m lucky in that I have always had really great teachers, both in the UK and in NY, and here so many have been teaching on the degree for so long that not only are they immensely talented, they really understand what the students are going through. Being allowed to share practice time with the professionals who come to use the space is also one of the best things about training here as you get to see so much cool stuff: bungee straps, Washington trapeze, rehearsals for internationals tours, artists from Cirque du Soleil, and even the odd celebrity who needs to learn to do something for a film or show! Its terrifying to think that I am on the same programme and pathway that some of those people started out on, and that if I work incredibly hard over the next few years I could actually stand a change of achieving a dream I had almost all but written off - actually getting somewhere and making a living as an artist.
