Specialisation in Trapeze

05 March 2014

I have been training in doubles and static trapeze for a few years before I came to the Circus Space and decided I wanted to try single point or ‘dance trapeze’. Its a much heavier bar rigged with a swivel so you can spin, swing and pirouette as well as all of the standard trapeze moves. I chose to try it as I’m looking for a discipline that is going to give me transferable aerial skills, as well as force me to work on my movement quality and flexibility - two things I feel I currently lack most as an artist.

My first few assessments were on the technical elements of spinning, beating and circling with the bar, for my fina one however, I was set the task of doing effectively contact improvisation on the trapeze. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it was a transcendental experience, but it was such a transcendental experience! I had no idea I was capable of moving in that way and finding unscripted pathways - I was totally shocked….and overjoyed!

Much as I would have loved to have done swinging or aerial straps, I think trapeze is going to be a good option. Hoping to get started soon! trapeze
