Understanding Performance. Understanding Circus

21 January 2014

One of the new classes we get this term is ‘Understanding Circus’ with the schools Performance and Academic Leader Rishi Trikha. Rishi is an academic and theatre director who has taught on the degree for years and his passion for raising the academic standard and nurturing the critical abilities of the students is really invigorating.

A lot of people are surprised when I tell them we have to write essays and study critical theory, but it is a degree level course, and learning about the theory of performance and studying some of the most significant aspects of twentieth and twenty-first century art is something I’m really excited about!

I already have a masters in an Film and Television Studies, and although I have some experience of the critical approaches and movements we will be studying, I have never had the opportunity to use them to examine dance or performance art. I can’t wait to get stuck in and see how engaging intellectually with the process and theory of creating work affects my outlook and approach to my goals!
